How Snap-on Tools Started

Snap-On was established by partners Joe Johnson and William A. Seidemann in the year 1920. In the past, the only available wrenches for mechanics were the ones we know as one piece units. Johnson created the idea for interchangeable sockets. After this, the professional auto mechanics took notice because of the efficiency and flexibility that the tool offered. The idea of pairing many sockets with a few handles became a success. The sales from selling these novel tool sets directly to customers generated income for the company. Soon after, new lines were added to the catalog published in 1923. In 1925, the founders of the company realized to recreate their marketing strategy by hiring 165 salesmen who demonstrated the products and distributed them to customers. Stanton Palmer, former factory sales representative, became the president of the corporation until he died ten years later after being put into office. During that time, the company was experiencing financial difficulties and sought out the help of one of its principal creditors, Forged Steel Products Company.  William E. Myers, the owner of Forged Steel Product Company, became the president of Snap-on Incorporated. He died in 1939 and this made Joe Johnson, the conceptual founder of Snap-On, the president for both Snap-On and Forged Steel Products. The company grew under his leadership. The demand for Snap-on tools increased especially during the World War II where the company experienced shortages for civilian customers. The company wanted to keep their relationship with their customer so they released available stock to its sales force. By the year 1945, all of their salesmen were delivering and carrying stock to their customers. Because of the big sales they were making for the company, Snap-on gave each of them a promotion as an independent businessperson in an assigned territory.
